Is dehydration the secret cause of my breakouts?

Is dehydration the secret cause of my breakouts? 1

When it comes to breakouts, we’re quick to point fingers at an oily skin for being the main culprit. While this can certainly be true, it’s a lesser-known fact that a dehydrated skin can cause breakouts too – a strange thought, right?!

But what exactly does “dehydrated” mean? Don’t get it confused with dry skin, which is a skin type that lacks natural oils produced by the body. People with dry skin on their face are prone to dry skin on their bodies too and should be using an oil or cream-based moisturiser to replenish the lack of oil.

Dehydrated skin lacks water. This does not necessarily mean that you’re consuming too little water (but when in doubt, grab another glass!), but can be caused by factors like the weather (think cold winds and lack of humidity), an unhealthy diet and incorrect product use. So what does this have to do with breakouts?

When the skin is dehydrated, it tries to compensate for the missing water by producing more oil. This excess oil is a major contributor to breakouts and irritation. The pores become clogged and form pimples and blackheads. You may even find your skin feels dry and oily at the same time and have a combination of oily areas with breakouts and dry patches.

How to tell if your skin is dehydrated
If you suspect you may have dehydrated skin, consider this:
Dehydrated skin often looks weathered and parched. It may even be flaky and dark circles around the eye area may seem exaggerated. You may also notice fine lines on the skin when you pinch your cheeks. Fine lines around the eye area are also a tell-tale sign. But having said that, the best way to find out is to visit a professional at a trusted skincare clinic such as Skin Renewal.

What can you do about it?
The most obvious way to combat dehydration is to invest in hydrating skincare products. Your therapist will be able to recommend the range best suited for your skin, and may suggest ingredients like hyaluronic acid, which is a powerful hydration agent. Wear a broad-spectrum SPF every day, no matter what the weather. Sun exposure can worsen dehydration and cause more irritation.

If you live in an area where the weather wreaks havoc on your skin, consider wearing a scarf when stepping out. If you use heaters or light a fire in your home, be sure to buy some humidifiers to ensure your skin doesn’t dry out from the heat.

You should know this already, but it’s worth repeating: eat a fresh balanced diet. That means lots of fresh fruit and veg, lean proteins, oily fish and fibre. You’ll be amazed at what a major difference a good diet makes to your complexion.

With the correct products and a couple of lifestyle changes you should be able to get your dehydration under control fairly quickly, and with this, see a major decline in breakouts and blackheads.

If you think your skin might be dehydrated, book a visit at your nearest Skin Renewal branch. Their expert therapists will assist you in finding a skincare range that complements your skin and addresses your specific needs.

  1. This happens to me when I travel, but investing in hydrating skincare products and drinking lots of water helps.
