Interested in CBD? Here’s everything you need to know 1

When CBD products first came to market, there was a lot of incorrect information doing the rounds. Now, several years later, we have access to so much more information, including studies on its benefits and efficacy. But the truth is that there is still a lot of uncertainty and misconceptions out there. To set the record straight, we approached two CBD professionals with a few of the most commonly asked CBD questions:

Kerry Spencer from Oliō, an innovative brand known for its premium, affordable and highly effective CBD products, and Grant Swartz from Taste of Cannabis, a division of CannaFoodsAfrica Pty Ltd, which produces and sources the finest Cannabis food, beverage and cosmetic products.

What are some of the health benefits of using CBD oil and other CBD products?

Kerry: CBD is analogous an endogenous compound (2-AG) which is naturally produced in the human body to maintain homeostasis over all other endogenous systems through the Endocannabinoid system.

CBD itself has many health benefits, but we use it as a synergistic ingredient/component in our formulations to act in complement with other bioactives to bring about personalised/purpose-specific effects with enhanced efficacy.

Here are just some of the health benefits scientifically linked to using CBD as a health and wellness supplement:

– Symptomatic relief of anxiety and depression

– Treats some epileptic syndromes

– Assists in the treatment of opioid addictions

– Relieves chronic muscular and joint pain

– Eases complications from diabetes

– Has neuroprotective properties

– Inhibits arthritis symptoms

– Stimulates appetite in cancer patients going through chemotherapy

– Treats insomnia

Grant: Several studies show the benefits of pure CBD may have wide-ranging positive effects. To understand those benefits, it’s important to consider our body’s endocannabinoid system, a complex system of enzymes, neurotransmitters, and receptors that plays an important role in the development of our central nervous system. This system helps regulate a variety of functions, including pain, motor control, memory, appetite, inflammation, and more.

Why do you think CBD has become so popular, so quickly?

Kerry: The journey to decriminalising marijuana across the globe has been a long one! We finally have access to scientific studies that prove that the cannabis plant can be used medicinally for many physical and physiological ailments. Furthermore, CBD allows us to experience these benefits without the high that THC in the cannabis plant gives us.

Another reason for CBD oil’s sudden surge in popularity can also be attributed to the #healthrevolution. People are seeking an alternative to traditional prescription or over-the-counter medications that can have devastating effects on their health.

Grant: The use of medical marijuana has been a hot topic for years. Advocates have mainly used cannabis to reduce chronic pain and nerve pain, but it is also being tested to treat PTSD among many other different conditions. To achieve the proclaimed benefits of cannabis without feeling “high,” CBD has been the focus of countless studies. So, it’s no wonder that CBD seems to have a wide appeal to those who suffer from chronic pain, especially people seeking an alternative to traditional prescription or over-the-counter pain medicine.

Are there any negative side effects of CBD? Is there anyone who should not be using it?

Grant: CBD use carries some risks. Though it’s often well-tolerated, CBD can cause side effects, such as dry mouth, diarrhoea, reduced appetite, drowsiness, and fatigue. CBD can also interact with other medications you’re taking, such as blood thinners.

Are CBD products safe for children and teenagers?

Kerry: CBD product dosages are currently formulated for adult use. There are also currently not enough studies done that can allow anyone to safely advise that children or teenagers use CBD products.

Is CBD oil addictive?

Grant: Unlike THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), CBD does not produce psychoactive effects. And while marijuana use can lead to dependence, current research suggests that CBD is not addictive.

Despite its popularity, a lot of people are still wary of CBD products due to the association with marijuana. Can you get “high” from using CBD oil or other CBD products?

Kerry: CBD Oil may contain trace amounts of THC depending on its quality, but it should never be enough to get you ‘high’. All the CBD present in our products is sourced through GMP companies located in USA and Europe, whereby we utilise CBD isolate (99% Pure CBD) or broad-spectrum CBD (contains 0% CBD). Many of the “CBD” Products on the market are made from home-extracted material, which may contain high contents of THC or even no traces of CBD. It is therefore important to ensure that your source of CBD products is from a reliable and reputable brand.

What dosage do you need and how long does it take to feel / see the benefits?

Kerry: Dosage depends on many things including age, weight, severity of symptoms and the concentration of CBD in the oil. CBD takes immediate effect if applied under the tongue and can be titrated up to a dosage that comfortably alleviates ailment symptoms (you cannot overdose on CBD).

Grant: The starting dosage is 5 milligrams per kilogram of body weight. This dose can later be increased to 5 mg per kilogram of body weight twice a day.

What should you look out for when you buy a CBD product (quality-wise)?

Kerry: There are a few things you can look out for to make sure you’re getting a good quality CBD oil:

  1. Check the bioavailability of the CBD
  2. There should be clear labelling of ingredients and milligrams
  3. Check that the level of THC in the oil is 0.2% or less
  4. Look for a full spectrum or broad-spectrum CBD with a variety of cannabinoids in it
  5. Look for what other ingredients are infused with the CBD and whether they act in synergy to bring about the claimed benefits that are made from the product

Grant: Before purchasing CBD, there are several factors to consider, including the type of CBD product, its potency, and the provider or manufacturer. People wishing to try CBD products must also be aware that they may interact with some medications. Anyone uncertain about CBD and its effects should speak with a doctor or healthcare provider.
