On a budget? ’Throwback cinema’ movies are perfect for date night in the month of love

4 movie recommendations for date night

‘Janu-worry’ may have come to an end, but with the rising costs of absolutely everything, many of us just don’t have the date night budgets we’d like to have. But… that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a romantic evening out with your partner this Valentine’s Month.

With Ster-Kinekor’s Throwback Cinema promotion continuing through February 2025, you get to enjoy some real cinema classics at the classic price of just R50 per ticket.

“Bringing back popular movie titles from years gone by is proving to be a popular must-see-again option for our big screen fans and, with the discounted ticket price for these Throwback Cinema titles, what’s not to love in this month of love! Continuing this popular promotion, the February line-up includes some special Valentine-focused titles, either as repeat viewing or for a first-time big screen experience,” says Lynne Wylie, chief marketing officer at Ster-Kinekor Theatres.

Getting into the spirit of Valentine’s Day, Ster-Kinekor’s Throwback Cinema line-up includes some all-time favourites. And even though budgets might be tight, you can still enjoy a date night at the movies.

Here’s what you can expect this month:

First up, releasing on 07 February, is 10 Things I Hate About You. A high-school boy, Cameron, cannot date Bianca until her anti-social older sister, Kat, has a boyfriend. So, Cameron pays a mysterious boy, Patrick, to charm Kat. This 1999 coming-of-age romantic comedy, adapted from William Shakespeare’s play The Taming of the Shrew, stars the late Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Larisa Oleynik.

The Proposal, a most fitting title to release on Valentine’s Day, 14 February, is a 2009 real feel-good romantic comedy, just perfect for celebrating the most loved-up day of the year! When New York editor Margaret faces deportation, she convinces her assistant Andrew to marry her in return for a promotion. However, when she visits his hometown, it changes her in many ways. Directed by Anne Fletcher, the movie stars an award-winning cast including Sandra Bullock, Ryan Reynolds, Mary Steenburgen, Craig T. Nelson and Betty White.

Releasing on Friday, 21 February, is another romantic title starring Sandra Bullock, the 1995 feel-good movie, While You Were Sleeping. A hopelessly romantic Chicago Transit Authority ticket booth operator is mistaken for the fiancée of a comatose patient, after she saves his life from an oncoming train. His brother is not convinced, which leads to further complications. Directed by Jon Turteltaub, the film also stars Bill Pullman, Peter Gallagher and Peter Boyle.

Rounding off the list of sweet Thowback Cinema titles for February is the 2002 romantic comedy, Sweet Home Alabama. A young woman who has reinvented herself as a New York City socialite must return home to Alabama to obtain a divorce from her husband after seven years of separation. The film, directed by Andy Tennant, stars Reese Witherspoon in the title role, together with Patrick Dempsey, Josh Lucas and Candice Bergen.

Throwback Cinema titles will be screened at the following Ster-Kinekor sites: Sandton and Rosebank Nouveau in Johannesburg; Irene and The Grove in Tshwane; Gateway in Umhlanga; Baywest in Gqeberha; Somerset in Somerset West; and Blue Route, Cavendish, V&A Waterfront and Tygervalley in Cape Town.
