Answer

Hi there, and thanks for your question. The truth is, when it comes to spots and pigmentation, you are unfortunately in a position where you have to be extremely diligent about managing your skin every day! You have GOT TO apply a good, broad spectrum SPF every single day! You must understand that it is not just when you are outside that you are being exposed to UV and IR radiation. Even the light coming through your windows (even when you cannot see the sun) is affecting you. So, your treatment plan has got to include: 1) A daily pigment inhibiting product which slows down your skin’s ability to make more pigment than what you are already battling with. 2) A product that will help you to increase your skin’s cell turn over so as to help you shed the skin cells that have already been pigmented. 3) A very good broad spectrum SPF product. If the problem is really severe, then you may have to also consider having a few treatments to help you deal with the pigmentation that you have already (if the pigmentation is too deep to treat with topicals, you unfortunately have no option but to do some treatments). So product-wise, my suggestions include the following: 1) Lumixyl as your pigment inhibitor. 2) Neostrata’s Ultra Smoothing Lotion (to be used every night). 3) Skin Ceuticals Sheer Mineral UV Defense. You can also, as an added but BRILLIANT bonus, add the Ovelle oral supplemts (made by Lamelle). Your treatments, should you choose to incorporate these, could include anything from some chemical peeling to laser therapy. You would have to visit one of our clinics so that we can have a good look at your skin I order to determine what the very best route is for YOU. I hope that I’ve been helpful.

Question

I’ve been suffering from acne my entire teen and tween years, at some point in my teens it got to a state whereby it was classified as severe acne and put on a very strong dosage of Roacuttane… thankfully it’s cleared with normal breakouts when it’s that time of the month. My main issue is I can never find a product that agrees with my skin or that actually clears up the oiliness and dry patches. Is there a skin care regiment that I can follow or a product that can help? PS: I’m exceptionally hairy as well and low threshold for pain.

Question from Lizelle Lloyd

Question

Hi Dr Maureen,

I am a 31 yr old mother with very limited time for skincare routine. I have recently been diagnosed with scalp atopic dermattis and have been put on a course of antibiotics for a full month. Ive only had severe cases after all three of my pregnancies with my last one been 8 months ago. How can I prevent this from returning and what products would you recommend for my scalp-keep in mind I have very curly ethic hair making it very difficult to use some products as I need extra moisture and conditioner for my hair. I have also recently noticed a mild case of eczema on my breast-making breastfeeding quite challenging.

Please help :)

From Tshehlana Noge

Question

Hi Dr Maureen, I have oily skin and in my 30s. I’m looking for a skincare treatment that will assist with clearing my skin and keep the oiliness at bay as well as serve as an anti aging. It doesn’t have to be in the same jar. I’m currently using Mineraline Time-it products for anti-aging, but it’s not doing anything for the oilyness and the random breakouts. Please could you advice.
