Are facials really necessary?

If you take good care of your skin at home, is it still necessary to go for regular facials? Does a facial offer longer term benefits or is it designed to just give your skin a boost for a day or two? After going for one my skin looks amazing for about three days and then returns back to normal.

This is a great question! It is actually VERY important to at least have a monthly facial treatment. There are a number of reasons for this. A good, active facial will help you in the following ways:

1)      It will offer you a deeper exfoliation than you can accomplish at home, this will encourage skin cell turnover and allow your home care products to penetrate better.

2)      It causes stimulation of the deeper layers of your skin, thereby encouraging the skin to increase in cellular activity and result in more collagen production (which may not be apparent when you are younger, but this counts for a great deal when you reach your forties and older).

3)      It puts you in the hands of a skincare professional who is then able to advise you regarding anything they may detect on your skin during your treatment, as a good therapist will be assessing your skin the entire time while they are busy working.

4)      Of course there are other benefits specific to the TYPE of facial you are having, for example, if you are being treated for pigmentation, the product that the therapist uses on you would certainly be more concentrated than what you would use at home, giving you better results.

  1. There are so many types of facials and the therapist at the salon should be honest in proposing the correct facial required. I have noticed that they do not check the skin analysis correctly.

  2. I haven’t found the courage to spend money on a salon facial but I’ve been happy to invest my money on masks that I can apply at home.
I make sure that I don’t wear any form of foundation the day before (at least) I use a face mask and not wear foundation for the two days that follow. That way I allow my skin to breathe and take in all the goodness of the treatment. I usually do a face mask at least once a week and mostly on weekends so I go makeup-free for half of the week. I’d really recommend this since it’s never a bad thing to wear less makeup, give people a chance to see the natural you.

  3. I couldn’t agree more with this article. At the beginning of last year I made a commitment to myself to up my skin care regime by including better skin care products and a monthly facial in my budget. After only 3 months I noticed a visible difference in my skin and one year down the line, my skin is in the best possible condition it’s ever been in despite being mature skin. I’ve always led a very healthy lifestyle including lots of exercise, drinking water and eating healthier so there was no change in that at all. But the enormous difference that monthly facials have made has convinced to ensure they are now always included in my monthly budget. And quite honestly ladies, the cost of a facial is the same price as a really good handbag; its just a question of priorities.

  4. I really think it depends on the individual’s skin. I know some people that consult with dermatologists will be advised to stay away from facials for the duration of their treatment as the products used my interfere with the dermatologist’s products. Also personally, I feel monthly may be excessive for some sensitive skins. Facials are really good ways to treat one’s skin and I like getting pampered but it is totally dependent on the individual.

  5. I think actually going for a facial is just a way of spoiling yourself and isn’t really necessary. Just drink lots of water and always include fresh fruit and veg in your diet, and you’ll have great skin from within
