Why is everyone talking about bone broth?

We’ve established that chicken soup is great for a cold or flu, but have you heard about the latest “it” drink, bone broth? Literally made by boiling bones in water until they begin to disintegrate, this warm drink is often accompanied by herbs and veggies.

So why bones? Inside a bone, you’ll find a wealth of nutrients. Within the hard shell lies minerals, healthy fats and proteins. But unlike wild animals, we can’t digest the actual bone, so the only way to get hold of those nutrients is to boil them out. A good broth will boil anywhere between 6 and 48 hours and can consist of any kind of bones, including fish, chicken or red meat.

Though not yet well-known, doctors and nutritionists are beginning to realise the nutritional benefits of drinking bone broth. Here are a few of the most important ones:

1. It’s great for your gut
If you suffer from leaky gut syndrome, chronic diarrhoea or constipation, this is the drink for you. The gelatin in the bone broth is known to help seal any small holes in the intestines, which will help to alleviate the symptoms associated with leaky gut syndrome.

2. It’s supports your immune system
Highly concentrated in essential minerals, bone broth is great for giving your body a boost, and the bone marrow also helps support a healthy body.

3. It contains collagen
Collagen is essential for keeping your skin looking healthy and youthful. Although the collagen found in bone broth isn’t enough to replace your regular collagen anti-ageing skincare regime, it definitely assists in making skin look more radiant.

4. Your joints will love it
Joint pain is often alleviated by taking glucosamine supplements, and it turns bones contain glucosamine as well!

5. Say hello to healthy bones!
The amount of phosphorus, magnesium, and calcium that seeps from the bones into your broth is great for your own bones! And much more natural than taking a supplement.
