No matter what your skin type, midday shine (particularly in summer) can affect anyone. If you’re prone to oily skin, however, you this is likely to be an everyday struggle. Although there isn’t a way to change your skin type or to stop shine completely, there are many things you can do to minimise it, and to make your skin less oily. Here, our top tips to get you on your way:
– Use a cleanser containing 2% salicylic acid. This acne-fighting ingredient breaks down the oil in your pores without drying your skin.
– If your moisturiser is creamy, switch over to a light lotion or a hydrating serum instead. If you over-moisturise or saturate your skin with rich moisturisers, oil production may increase.
– Exfoliate once a week and apply a clay mask to absorb excess oils and mattify your complexion.
– Apply a mattifying primer to help eliminate excess oil production and take control of your oily zones. We love black|Up Perfect Matifying Primer.
– Wear a lightweight, non-oily and non-greasy sunscreen every day. It might make you feel slightly oilier than without, but trust us, sun damage is far worse! Plus, there are even sunscreens designed for acne-prone and oily skin, so there’s no excuse not to wear one!
– Wear a BB cream or tinted moisturiser over your sunscreen as opposed to foundation. The lighter formula won’t clog your pores and will leave your skin feeling fresher and less “made up.”
– Invest in some good quality blotting tissues. Designed to absorb excess oil and control shine, they can be used as often as necessary. Plus, unlike too many layers of oil-absorbing translucent powder, they won’t make the texture of your skin cakey.

I still haven’t figured out the right products for my shiny forehead. The clay mask does help but sadly I can’t use it daily.
The primer is really the best tip, works well.
I have really oily skin and large pore especially on my T-Zone, blotting tissues help but i found that pore minimizing serums work better in the long run for me. Aloe Vera gel also works wonders.
I have an oily t-zone and dry cheeks so when I moisturise, I focus mainly on my cheeks. I give that a few minutes to sink in then apply a primer (currently using Inglot and Smashbox) followed by my BB cream. When I get shiny throughout the day, I using a blotting tissue followed by MAC’s blotting powder and that keeps me going for a good few hours.
I used to overcompensate for oiliness by using products that were too harsh and ended up ignoring the fact that my skin is dehydrated and is just desperate for some moisture! I know it sounds counter intuitive, but sometimes the oil is your skin’ sway of asking for moisture! Try using foaming but non irritating cleansers with a toner and moisturize enough! I found that adding a serum to my routine helped so much! My skin is now much more normal and the oiliness is completely gone! This was all recommended by a beauty therapist, so I do recommend going for professional products and advice.
As I use to have oily skin, but now dry except summer time on my chin and forehead. Where I do find blotting tissues to be very handy in controlling the shine.
Once I used salicylic acid based product and had the most angry skin I’ve ever had. I havent used anything with SA in it since.
I also worked out that using too much eye cream makes for every shiny oily looking under-eye area. You would think it would be common sense but you live and learn right? :)
The best thing I ever did for my combination skin was invest in the Stila Primer which also has a factor SPF 30 in it. It completely controls the oil production on my skin under the BB cream even on the hottest days.
Gosh I just hate the shiny forehead, one minute you’re looking great the next shiner alert. Theses tips seems easy enough especially the clay mask.
Sounds easy, I can do this.
