Is there a link between acne and cow’s milk?

Is there a link between cow’s milk and acne? So many people claim that when they went on a dairy-free diet their skin cleared up.

Is there a link between dairy products and acne?

Dr Maureen Allem, skin expert from Skin, Body & Health Renewal, answers:

“If you are severely lactose intolerant or have an allergy or sensitivity to dairy products, the this can quite easily manifest on the skin. For some people it manifests in digestive issues or stomach pain or cramps in the colon, or for others it can result in severe headaches and nausea, but for many, this issue will manifest as breakouts on the skin. But to simply say that milk or dairy products are a cause of acne is not necessarily accurate it really does depend from person to person.”

  1. It’s also important to make sure that your milk is organic. Farmers are now feeding their cows corn instead of grass. The result is that cows milk now contains more omega 6 fatty acids than omega 3 fatty acids. Over consumption of omega 6 can cause inflammation hence break outs. But it just depends on the quality of your milk

  2. I drink a lot of milk daily and definitely do not see a link between the two. I totally agree with the fact that it depends from person to person.

  3. Yeah, I don’t think there’s a link either since my friend and I grew up eating and drinking the same stuff during our teen years yet I always had clear skin and she has struggled with acne up until now into our late 20s.

  4. How can we know if dairy products are causing acne if the only sign is acne, there is no pther side effect. We eat so many different things in a day so how can we tell, is there a test?

    1. Hi Cupcake. The easiest way to test if dairy is causing acne is to cut dairy out of your diet for a short period of time. If you find that your skin improves quite considerably then it is possible that dairy is aggravating your acne.
