A festival survival guide

festival

Music Festival season is officially open for fun. Looking good is a priority, but who needs the hassle of lugging around a huge make-up kit or doing your nightly routine in an ablution block overflowing with germs? Besides, you might miss something. Here’s what we’ll be packing. See you in the crowd, beauties.

Make-up

The two most important factors are practicality and longevity. Whether you’ll be dancing up a storm or relaxing in the VIP tent, your make-up should be simple and easy to touch up. Replace your usual foundation and powder with sunscreen and a lightweight BB cream. If you are worried about an oily T-zone, blotting tissues will keep you looking fresh throughout the day.
You may want to slay with attention-grabbing smoky eyes, liquid liner and false lashes. It could work, but we suggest that you embrace a lighter, cleaner look. Add a splash of colour to your fresh complexion with a bold lip stain or a wash of your favourite pastel eye shadow and add some hair accessories to brighten your look.

Hair

Kick off the festivities with a loose hairstyle that is easy to achieve and doesn’t require a lot of maintenance. A turban headband or a quirky Alice band will give your look a ‘festival edge’. Should your hair start feeling flat after day two, try the ever popular top knot or a loose side plait for an effortlessly cool look. Braids are also super convenient for weekend-long festivals. A braid spray should keep them looking fresh the entire weekend and you have endless options for styling them.
When it comes to festival hair, dry shampoo is your bestie. Embrace your natural texture and choose a style based on what works for your hair. As most festivals run for only two or three days, there’s no need to wash and condition. Should you wish to ‘freshen’ it up, a spritz of dry shampoo will do the trick.

Products to pack

  1. Facial wipes: It’s important to remember that not all festivals offer hot, running water. Replace your usual skin care routine with wipes and a moisturiser that contains a high SPF. Great for removing your make-up, face wipes are also handy for cleaning your hands when you’re nowhere near a bathroom, as well as spills. We love Garnier’s SkinActive Micellar Oil-infused Cleansing Wipes, R59,95 and NIVEA Daily Essentials 3-in-1 Gentle Cleansing Facial Wipes, R49,99 for a pack of 25’s.
  2. SPF: You’ll need your SPF even more if you’re spending hours moving between stages and back to camp. Pack a broad-spectrum sunscreen to be on the safe side. Try Safari SPF 40 moisturising sunscreen which come in handy travel-sized 20ml tubes (R130, for a pack of five) or Bioderma Photoderm Max SPF50+ AquaFluid, R219,95 which does double duty as a foundation.
  3. Lip balm: Dry lips are uncomfortable and will crack if overexposed to the sun, so be sure to moisturise with a good lip balm, like Safari SPF 15 Lip Balm, R25, that protects you from harmful UV rays.
  4. Dry wash: Festivals may be the one place to get dirty, but no one likes a sweaty Betty. Those who still want to (and should) feel clean after a heavy night should invest in Pump It Up Dry Shower Body Wash, R40. It’s specially formulated to cleanse your body and eliminate odour-creating bacteria with its antibacterial properties, leaving your skin clean and moisturised. Dry shampoo will also come in handy, because you probably won’t be able to wash your hair. A few sprays will leave your locks looking and (and smelling) clean. Try Tresemme’s Instant Refresh Dry Shampoo, R85,99,
  5. Hair bobbles – Keep your mane intact with cute hair bobbles that come in a fun variety of colours. You can get a pack of three invisibobbles for R80. The intensified spiral shape puts your hair in place with an extra strong grip so you can dance like no one is watching, without your tresses getting in the way.
  6. Perfume – Just because you’ll be out in the bundu doesn’t mean you can’t smell like a flower. We think essence like a first day in spring, R115, smells blooming marvellous.
