Smells like Autumn

Switch up your scent to something that complements falling leaves, cooler weather and warmer clothes. Think aromatic fragrances that help turn up the heat as the temperature drops and winter descends.

Smells like autumn

The Classics:

Estée Lauder Cinnabar EDP, R645 for 50ml
This spicy oriental is having a big moment on the local scent scene right now (even though it was launched back in 1978). Its top notes are very warming scents such as peach, spices and cloves. At the heart you’ll find feminine fragrances such as rose, ylang ylang and jasmine. The base notes are really comforting and heady (think vanilla, incense, sandalwood and amber) making this a fragrance to wear well into the depths of winter.

Clinique Aromatics Elixir, R550 for 25ml
This scent (the oldest of the Clinique fragrances) is a real classic – but don’t think it’s not as wearable today as it was back in the 70s. It’s a chypre-floral and chypre’s are based on aromatic scents such as oakmoss and bergamot. And this scent is all about distinctive, delightful and delicate aromas: think verbena, sage and chamomile in the top notes which lead to sweeter more feminine notes such as rose and white flowers. And at the base, those typically chypre notes like oakmoss and patchouli reign supreme. Delicious!

Jo Malone Nutmeg and Ginger Cologne, R950 for 100ml
Like the name of this scent suggests, it’s all about warming and delicious spices (thinking ginger cookies and baked puddings? Us too!) Launched in 1990, the story goes that Jo Malone created this scent for her first twenty skincare clients and the demand was instant. It’s a fresh spicy scent, making it perfectly gender neutral (he’ll be reaching for yours we’re sure) and features nutmeg, ginger, sandalwood and cedar.

The Ones to Watch:

Tom Ford Jasmine Rouge, EDP, R1 750 for 50ml
This sensual fragrance (it’s Tom Ford, so expect instant sex appeal) is a spicy floral so it’s a great balance of aromatic notes and womanly seductive florals.
At the top you’ll smell the delicious scents of bergamot, mandarin, cinnamon, ginger, and cardamom, as well as black and white pepper. The middle notes (the heart) are distinctly feminine with scents such as Sambac jasmine, neroli, ylang ylang and clary sage. And lastly, the fragrance’s base notes are a mix of Mexican vanilla, labdanum, leather, wood and amber notes. Definitely worth a sniff when you’re next near the fragrance counters.

Gucci Guilty Intense EDP, R815 for 50ml
This floral oriental packs a punch with pink pepper and lilac. So while it’s certainly not for the faint hearted, it does rate high in the sexy stakes. It’s a warm and delicious mix of zesty and peppery scents at the top (think mandarin and pink pepper) and then stars flowers at its fragrant core (lilac, violet and heliotrope). The base notes are solid oriental staples like amber and patchouli. All we can say is, spray this one on if you want your hot date to really sizzle. Enjoy!
