If you’re on TikTok, chances are you see plenty of beauty trends doing the rounds. And while you may learn a thing or two if you sift through them, you’ll also find that often times, the trends are a little “out there.” Which leads us to today’s article. Enter vabbing, the new fragrance trend that’s dividing social media.
A combination of “vagina” and “jabbing,” vabbing is the practice of using vaginal fluids as perfume, dabbing it behind the ears, on the neck or anywhere else you would normally spray your favourite eau de parfum.
If your first thoughts are “what the hell?!” you’re not alone! But the concept is this: vaginal fluids release pheromones, chemical factors that trigger a social response in members of the same species or release hormonal responses from others, and may assist in attracting potential partners.
TikTok has made this idea go viral, but it was first introduced by sexologist Shan Boodram in 2019. In her book The Game Of Desire: 5 Surprising Secrets To Dating With Dominance — And Getting What You Want, she writes about the time when she asked a group of her clients to try it out and visit a crowded bar. According to Boodram, it worked a charm. “Vaginal fluids, especially around ovulation, but really any time you want to feel an extra boost of confidence, can serve as a love potion,” she wrote.
From a scientific point of view, you won’t be surprised to hear that is very little data to support the theory. Plenty of studies have been conducted to understand the effects of pheromones, but these have mainly been done on animals.
Is it harmful? No. But if you’re going to try it, proceed with hygiene (ie. wash your hands!).
Our verdict? Each to their own, but we’re giving this one a miss. Potential suitors will have to be drawn to our sparkling personalities and dashing good looks instead!
