Why everyone is raving about micellar waters

Despite micellar waters being around for decades, they’ve only recently gained international popularity. But what’s all the fuss about?

Micellar water is a cleansing formula that removes dirt, impurities and make-up from the skin. It first became popular in France, and is thought to have originated over 100 years ago. Micellar water contains “micelles” – tiny oil molecules that are suspended in water. These molecules have the ability to attract dirt and oil, and they draw out impurities, but the beauty is that they don’t dry out your skin.

Many cleansers have a foamy component that strips the skin of dirt (and sometimes of its moisture, too). Micelles hold on to dirt, and dissolve it, all while hydrating the skin.

Micellar waters are also free of alcohol (so they are non-drying) and are usually completely safe to use around the delicate eye area. They can even be used on very dry and blemished skins. And best of all? They require absolutely no rinsing, so you can cleanse and hydrate your skin in one easy step.

Only downfall? They don’t always remove waterproof eye make-up.

We think they’re the perfect all-in-one travel companion and the perfect product to simplify your skincare routine. Some of our favourites include:

Lancôme Micellar Cleansing Water, R389
Bioderma Sensibio H2O Solution Micellaire, R190
Payot Soothing Cleansing Water, R305
Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water, R80

  1. I haven’t tried this type of product before. Does your face really feel clean without using soap and water? It will be interesting to tryout nevertheless.

  2. The Grnier Micellar Cleasing water is so amazing it really works well and leves your skin feeling hydrated and clean! Like you mentioned it does struggle to remove water proof make-up though, but I will still continue to use it!

  3. I was a bit disappointed with the Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water (the blue bottle) as I found it did not remove my eye make up completely. I can’t wait to try the Bioderma which I have heard great things about

  4. I recently learnt about Micella Water, to my surprise it has been around for ages. A clear explanation that runway models explain why that they do not use water on their faces. Have purchased the Garnier Micellar Cleaning Water, yet to note more about the tangible results for now it feels odd not to wash my face with water…. like i said i will report back with tangible results.

  5. I have also heard a lot about micellar cleansing water and at first I didn’t understand what the fuss was about with water and why it is better than wipes but now I understand the technology behind the product

  6. I have tried the Garnier one. It hydates my skin and removes makeup well but made my eyes sting a bit, despite saying on the bottle that it’s safe to use around the eye area.

  7. thank you for the review and prices as well. its really a big help! cant wait to get one of these since my skin is sensitive to make up wipes!
