Getting their glam on

Getting their glam on!Gabrielle Union

‘Even if you get the most expensive nail polish, if you go to the bathroom a lot, you’re going to wash your hands a lot. So it’s going to chip; it’s going to fade. So why not buy the cheaper version if you have to redo it anyway?’

‘The [skipping] rope is great for your face; you lose a lot on your face when you do the rope.’

Jennifer Hudson

‘I just need an eyebrow pencil. I don’t need a lot of make-up, because I like natural beauty. Oh, and maybe just a little bit of blush. And that’s it.’

‘I contour by using a lighter shade of foundation under my eyes instead of concealer. I take it down a triangle by the sides of my nose, and then apply blush on top. I don’t do round rosy cheeks, that’s for old people. It’s played out.’

‘I always keep a pair of Ray-Bans handy! And sometimes I put a little gold eye shadow in the inner corners of my eyes—it’s more subtle than white, but it still really makes you look more awake.’

‘Growing up as a Black woman, I felt that if I didn’t have long hair, I wasn’t going to be beautiful. I always thought that. Cutting my hair was freeing. Someone saying you’re beautiful and the fact that you have no hair makes you even more beautiful said to me it’s not about my hair. It’s about something else we emanate. I’ve lived with that my whole life.’

‘A bad, bad hair day, I slick my hair back. I put water on it first, a little oil, a little grease, a little vita-pointe, and then I do it in a twist, twirl it around with a million bobby pins, and then I get the little baby hairs around my edges and slick them down with some brown gel, or clear gel, and then I tie a scarf around it. Then, I get in the shower, put my make-up on, get dressed, and right when I’m about to walk out that door I pull it off, and it looks like that was done on purpose.’

‘We, as women, have to love ourselves. Whatever you look like, you better be comfortable with it. … All my life black men have told me how flawed I am. People may look at that picture and not necessarily be able to identify my woes about my own body, but I have them. It’s just that I’ve gotten to the point where I’m like, ‘This is me’ and I embrace that. I’m getting older. I’ve got wrinkles in my face that I didn’t before, but it’s my face!’

‘Water is my best tool – it sounds clichéd – but I think about how long I’ve been doing this and I realise I had to go back to the basics. It’s the simple things; wash your make up off and drink loads of water. Those things keep your skin clear and keep you looking healthy and feeling good. And working out, of course.’

  1. Sometimes people put celebrities on pedestals when they are only human at the end of the day. They have flaws as much as we have so its nice to know that they do things that most of us do as well.
