Summer hair care tips for natural hair

Summer hair care tips for natural hair 1

Summer is here and that means spending more time in the outdoors and being exposed to the elements. Where there’s sun exposure, there’s potential for damage. We know by now to wear sunscreen to protect our skin from damaging UV sunrays, but we often forget about our hair.

How the sun can damage your hair
Overexposure to UV rays doesn’t only have a drying effect on hair, it also damages the hair texture. This will result in easy breakage and leave your hair looking dull and lifeless. Halo Heritage, creators of quality hair care products for Type 3 & 4 natural hair, are hair experts and have the following five tips to protect your hair, ensuring healthy hair throughout this summer.

Protect your hair from the sun
Wear a wide-brimmed hat or a headwrap when in the sun to protect your scalp, hair and skin. It also blocks harmful UV rays. If you are wearing your hair in a style that exposes your scalp, you will need extra protection. Minimising your hair’s exposure will however always be your first line of defense.

Condition and moisturise your hair
When spending time in the sun or swimming, your hair will need deep conditioning to protect it and counteract the drying effects of chlorine or salt water. Without optimal hydration, your hair will be more prone to breakage. Before swimming, remember to wet your hair first. Divide your hair in sections and spray with water before you moisturise with a conditioner. Hair products that condition your hair will “lock in” moisture and smooth the hair cuticle. Try some Royal Repair Conditioner (R179.95 for 300ml) from the Boity Hair Care Collection. Smooth it over your hair and the top of your head before you go outdoors or swim. It contains essential oils such as Black Seed Oil, Shea Butter, Vitamin E, Argan Oil and Coconut Oil to deeply condition the hair and “lock in” moisture. The Coconut Oil has a natural SPF for additional sun protection. Twist each section gently into a bun and secure with a hair pin. Rinsing and handling your hair afterwards will be a breeze.

Rinse your hair after swimming
Gently rinse your hair with a mild moisturising and softening sulfate-free shampoo immediately after swimming. This will get rid of any chlorine or salt that has a drying effect. Use warm rather than hot water. Never use a stiff cotton towel that can damage your hair while it’s wet. Rather pat your hair dry with a plush microfibre towel or an old t-shirt that is soft and gentle. Never rub your hair. Always apply a deep conditioning treatment to moisturise and protect your hair.

Treat and show your hair some love
As a special treatment and to repair sun and heat damage after exposure, the Supreme Leave-in Conditioner (169.95 for 200ml) also from the Boity Hair Care Collection contains Black Seed Oil, Jojoba and Argan Oils to “lock in” moisture, tame frizz and add shine your tresses.

Get a hair trim
If your ends have had enough of the sun and feel more frizzy, a regular hair trim might just be the answer. It will make your hair more manageable and ensure your hair looks healthy.

Enjoy the summer with confidence and get your healthy dose of vitamin D, but remember to protect and take good care of your hair.
