When it comes to the overall health and appearance of our hair, many of us think of ways in which we can treat, repair and protect the lengths of our hair. We spend time, money and effort to care for our hair strands. But how many of us pay the same amount of attention to our scalp?
In an ideal world, we would treat our scalps with the same attention and dedication that we treat the skin on our face. Scalp care is one of the most important, yet somehow still underrated, beauty practices.
Not only is it important to maintain good scalp hygiene to avoid conditions like dandruff and infections, but if you neglect your scalp, it may become evident on the state of your hair. Poor or slow hair growth, hair loss and breakage may all be attributed to an unhealthy scalp.
Sofnfree recently introduced their new Hyaluronic Care range, a haircare collection that focuses on the health of the scalp, and in turn, supports healthy hair growth, stronger hair and increased shine.
We chatted exclusively to Lerato Selepe Tikwayo, Marketing Manager at Amka Sofnfree – and got some insightful answers to our most pressing scalp care questions.
- Most of us don’t give scalp care much thought, focusing instead on our hair. Why is caring for our scalps important?
The scalp is the foundation of healthy hair. Just as healthy soil is needed for plants to grow, a healthy scalp creates the ideal environment for strong, healthy hair. When the scalp is properly hydrated, balanced, and free from irritation or buildup, hair follicles can function optimally, supporting healthier-looking hair. Poor scalp health can lead to discomfort, inflammation, and compromised hair quality.
2. Is there a link between scalp health and hair growth?
Yes. Healthy hair growth starts at the scalp. Hair follicles are located within the scalp, and when the scalp is well nourished and properly hydrated, follicles are better able to produce healthy strands. Conditions such as dryness, excessive buildup, inflammation, or dandruff can disrupt the scalp environment and may negatively affect hair growth and retention. Ingredients such as rosemary extract and biotin are often used to support scalp health and stronger-looking hair.
3. What problems might you experience if you don’t care for your scalp properly?
Neglecting scalp care can lead to a range of issues, including:
- Dryness and tightness
- Itching and irritation
- Flaking
- Dandruff
- Product buildup
- Excess oiliness
- Increased hair breakage
- A less favourable environment for healthy hair growth
Over time, an unhealthy scalp can affect both the appearance and condition of your hair.
4. How can one tell the difference between a dry or flaky scalp, and dandruff?
A dry scalp is usually caused by a lack of moisture. The flakes tend to be small, white, and dry, and may be accompanied by tightness or irritation.
Dandruff is a scalp condition often linked to excess oil production and an imbalance of the scalp microbiome. Dandruff flakes are typically larger, oilier, and may be accompanied by redness, itching, or irritation.
While both conditions involve flaking the underlying causes are different which is why targeted treatment is important.

5. Does your hair type (i.e. curly or coily vs. straight) affect your scalp’s needs?
Absolutely. Curly and coily hair types tend to be naturally drier because scalp oils have a harder time travelling down the hair shaft. As a result, individuals with textured hair often need more moisture-focused scalp and haircare routines. In contrast, straighter hair types may distribute natural oils more easily. Textured hair also benefits from ingredients that support moisture retention and scalp comfort
6. What are some of the WORST things people do that damage their scalp?Â
Some common habits that can damage the scalp include:
- Overwashing with harsh shampoos
- Ignoring product buildup
- Excessive scratching
- Keeping a protective style too long without adequate scalp care.
- Applying heavy products directly to the scalp without cleansing properly
- Tight hairstyles that create tension on the scalp
- Excessive heat styling
- Neglecting scalp hydration
These habits can contribute to irritation, dryness, inflammation, and weakened hair over time.

7. What does a healthy scalp routine look like and what are some of the key ingredients you should incorporate in your day-to-day care products?
A healthy scalp routine should include:
Keep your scalp clean by removing dirt, oil, and product build-up regularly. Use our new Hyaluronic Care Wipes for quick refreshes between washes and the Hydrating Shampoo and Replenishing Conditioner on wash days. Aim to wash your hair at least once a week.
Hydrate daily to keep your scalp comfortable and balanced. The Hyaluronic Care Refresher Spray provides lightweight moisture and can be used every day on both the hair and scalp.
Nourish and protect your scalp from dryness and irritation with the Hyaluronic Care Scalp Serum 2-3 times a week. Gently massaging the serum into the scalp can also help boost circulation.
Get targeted treatments when necessary to manage specific scalp conditions and concerns.
Key ingredients to look for include:
- Hyaluronic Acid for intense hydration and long-lasting moisture.
- Rosemary Extract to help refresh the scalp and support healthy-looking hair.
- Biotin to help strengthen strands and reduce breakage.
- Black Castor Oil to seal in moisture and improve manageability.
- Argan Oil to nourish, smooth, and add brilliant shine.
- Olive Oil to deeply moisturize, soften, and improve hair elasticity
