These are the six skincare products our editor used religiously during the summer holidays 1

The summer holidays may be over, but summer certainly isn’t. If you’re still looking to perfect your summer skincare routine, take some inspo from the simple yet powerful regime our editor adopted over the festive season.

“I adapt my skincare regime a couple of times per year to accommodate my skin’s ever-changing needs, and the weather is by far the biggest influencer on my product choices. It’s so easy to let your guard down during summer, particularly during the holiday season, but every time I’ve done so, I was left with major regret.

While I don’t usually have a problem with pigmentation, I need to be very careful during summer as I tend to develop sun spots on my nose and cheeks if I spend a lot of time outdoors. This summer, I decided to use a vitamin C serum in the morning (vitamin C is one of the best ingredients you can use to treat and prevent pigmentation) and a vitamin A product in the evening (vitamin A or retinol is one of the best anti-ageing ingredients on the market and it also helps limit my occasional breakouts).

Coupled with a few great quality supporting products, this regime saved my skin this summer. Not only was my complexion even and radiant, but the product combo also kept it hydrated and blemish-free (even while I had Covid!). I didn’t develop any new sun spots and my old ones have faded dramatically.

These are the six skincare products that saved my skin this summer:

Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar Water Makeup Remover (R259.95 for 250ml)
An oldie but a goodie, this micellar water has reached cult status among beauty lovers. It removes even the most stubborn waterproof makeup and is extra gentle on the skin. I use this every evening to remove my makeup, sunscreen and other impurities from my skin, before cleansing. I’m a big believer in this double-cleansing method as it ensures all bacteria, oil and dirt is removed from the skin and reduces your risks of developing blemishes.

Gève Enzymatic Cleanser (R350.00)
Prior to starting this regime, I was testing out a full range of Gève skincare products. You can read more about my experience over here. I loved the cleanser so much that I continued using it even after the rest of my Gève products had run out. This cleanser contains enzymes of pineapple and papaya to remove dead skin cells, leaving skin smooth, radiant and glowing. I really enjoy the texture and the scent, and while it feels ultra-gentle on my skin, it works beautifully to unclog pores and gently exfoliate.

Endocare Radiance C Ferulic Edafence Serum (R1146.00)
If you’re looking for a high-performance vitamin C serum, this is a real powerhouse. An advanced anti-pollution antioxidant serum, it contains 5% vitamin C, 1% vitamin E and 0.5% ferulic acid. Revolutionary anti-pollution ingredient Edafence (a unique ingredient derived from a plant found in the Antarctic) is clinically proven to defend skin against damage caused by pollution, sunlight, tobacco smoke and other environmental stressors. While I enjoy the texture, the scent and the consistency, what I enjoy most about this serum is the results. Since using it my skin has been noticeably more radiant and even. My skin tends to be a little sensitive to vitamin C, but showed no sensitivity while using this. I love the brilliant airless dropper packaging – it dispenses the perfect amount of serum every time, ensuring 80 pumps per bottle, and making it impossible to squirt out too much or too little.

Environ Focus Care Moisture+ Vita Complex Super Moisturiser (R520.00)
I’ve been using this luxurious moisturiser in the morning after I apply my vitamin C serum. It contains a variety of moisturisers and emollients to enhance and protect the skin’s barrier function (a healthy barrier function means less moisture loss, better nutrient absorption and a healthier complexion). It has a lovely light consistency that absorbs quickly and gives the skin a silky after-feel. In addition to giving the skin a moisture boost, it also contains vitamins and antioxidants that help protect the skin from free radical damage. I love that it comes in a 100ml bottle – I always find that I go through a 50ml moisturiser rather quickly and would much rather purchase a larger bottle that last longer.

Optiphi Complexion Control (R1400.00)
Vitamin A (also known as retinol) will forever be one of my hero ingredients. It has powerful anti-ageing benefits, but it also helps minimise pigmentation and brightens the skin. When used in conjunction with vitamin C, you’ll have a powerful radiance-boosting duo. This brightening moisturiser is designed to treat dark marks and uneven skin tone, increase the skin’s radiance and protect it against harmful free radicals. I use it on its own, every night after cleansing. It has a lovely rich texture, absorbs quickly and leaves my skin feeling smooth and silky.

iS Clinical Extreme Protect SPF 40 (R1705.00)
I love a tinted sunscreen, particularly during summer when I wear less foundation. This broad-spectrum physical sunscreen is rich in antioxidants and helps protect against environmental damage thanks to Extremozyme technology. It helps support the skin’s health by moisturising while it protects, leaving it soft and smooth. It has a dewy finish (which I love!) and I like the consistency: it spreads nicely and blends into my skin without too much effort. The tint offers light coverage and looks natural against my skin (I wear shade Beige). Because it offers really high protection, I feel confident spending time outdoors while wearing it.

The sun is by far the skin’s biggest threat, so my best summer skincare advice would be to protect your skin with a broad-spectrum SPF, and to invest in a good quality vitamin C serum for the morning and a vitamin A serum for the evening.
