Top tips to minimise frizz as we head into the warmer months 2

Frizz can affect any hair type, during any time of the year, but it’s known to be more prominent during spring and summer. For many women it can be highly frustrating, and sometimes, no matter what you do, nothing seems to work. There are plenty of factors contributing to frizz, and the most common one, is humidity.

Humidity refers to the moisture content in the air. When the weather is warmer, the air can hold more moisture, which is why we have increased levels of humidity during spring and summer. Think of the way a plant’s roots naturally gravitate towards the nearest source of water in the soil; similarly, our hair reaches for the nearest source of moisture when it is dry. When humidity is high, our hair naturally tries to source moisture from the air, resulting in a head full of frizz.

There’s nothing we can do about the weather, but there is plenty we can do to replenish our hair’s moisture content so that it doesn’t have to source moisture from the air. Plus, we know a few simple lifestyle hacks that’ll help minimise your chances of developing frizz, regardless of the humidity.

Follow these six tips for less frizz this season:

Shower with lukewarm water
Hot water has the same effect on hair as high humidity. Avoid this by showering with lukewarm water instead. If you’re brave enough, rinse your hair with cold water after shampooing and conditioning – it seals the cuticle, locking moisture in and strengthening strands.

Avoid friction
There’s no doubt that a good towel dry after a shower feels great, but when you rub your hair and scalp, the friction may not only damage hair, but also lead to unwanted frizz. If possible, use a microfiber cloth or soft material instead, and whatever fabric you use, always gently pat your hair dry instead of rubbing it.

Choose your shampoo wisely
Shampoo is the first item in your arsenal that can be used to combat frizz. Because frizzy hair is often dry, you may want to consider a moisturising shampoo formula. You’ll want a shampoo and conditioner combo that contains moisturising ingredients to smooth the hair shaft, but that’s not too heavy (and weighs hair down). Kadus Sleek Smoother Shampoo (R250.00) and Kadus Sleek Smoother Conditioning Balm (R310.00) work together to instantly condition and smooth dry, frizzy hair after just one application, and moisturises unruly hair strands for shiny, smoother hair.

Add plenty of hydration
Keeping hair moisturised and hydrated is key to minimizing frizz. When choosing hair care products, always look at the ingredient list to ensure they contain moisturising ingredients like glycerine, shea butter or other natural extracts that nourish and moisturise hair. Glyco Lemon Fresh Apple Nourishing Shampoo (from R29.95) is enriched with hydrating aloe vera extracts. The powerful formulation cleanses and refreshes hair leaving it feeling soft, shiny and moisturised. It nourishes and hydrates hair from root to tip and has a soothing herbal scent.

For a lightweight formula that works hard to moisturise and prevent frizz, try John Frieda Frizz Ease Weightless Wonder Conditioner (R130.00). It weightlessly nourishes and detangles frizzy, fine hair helping to eliminate frizz without weighing down your hair. This conditioner is infused with hydrating aloe water for a burst of moisture.

Mask up
A hair mask is not an everyday essential, it’s more like the cherry on a cake. While you can get away without it, it adds a lot of value to your regime when you used it once a week or bi-weekly. To help combat frizz, we recommend label.m Anti-Frizz Mask (R495.00). Intensively smoothing and nourishing, this rich, indulgent mask features the exclusive Smoothing Biopolymer Technology and Sacha Inchi Oil, rich in essential fatty acids, to replenish moisture and strengthen while helping to regulate hair’s natural oils. It offers the ultimate humidity-resistance and a protective formula with Argan Oil to detangle and nourish for longer-lasting smooth and silky hair.

Consider a leave-in serum or crème
For extra nourishment and moisturisation, consider applying a leave-in product designed to combat frizz. John Frieda Frizz Ease Weightless Smoothing Crème (R130.00) is the ideal solution for fine hair. It is infused with aloe water to hydrate hair, smooth and control frizz without weighing fine hair down.

If fine hair isn’t your main concern, try label.m Anti-Frizz Lotion (R385.00). This frizz-controlling and nourishing leave-in treatment helps you achieve longer-lasting straight, controlled and silky hair. It is infused with the blend of Mediterranean organic mandarin extract, organic myrtle berries and juniper berries for a silky-smooth, frizz-free result.
