Question from Khanya Gundwana

Question

Hello Dr Allem!
My bottom lip is weirdly pigmented. It is not evenly toned – some spots are really dark, a large part of it is really pink, and then some part are the normal tone.
What could be the cause of this? And what is the solution to having evenly toned lips?
Thanks!

Answer

Thank you for your question, Khanya. Unfortunately this is a common occurrence with dark skins. It is just the nature of the dark skin types as the lips are so vascular and the skin on the lips is different to that on the rest of our face. It’s quite tricky to treat, but to be honest, the most successful treatments, believe it or not, are having permanent make-up done on the entire lip area to get the lips to be 1 colour. Permanent make-up has evolved amazingly with new pigments and new techniques and I’ve seen lips look beautifully matched with natural colours and you would never say that the mouth has been tattooed! At our clinics we have got Permanent Make-up professionals who come to our clinics and offer services such as these to our patients. If you would like us to connect you with one of these amazing artists, you can contact your nearest branch and we will put you in touch with one of the permanent make-up artists. Question from JOALINE

Question

I have been using various skin ranges over the years, most resent being the Rooibos range, but nothing seems to get to the area I’m targeting. I have combination skin(Oily T-zone; Dry cheeks) with hyper pigmentation on jaw line + some acne scars. I’m trying to get started on a new product range, but there are so many products, how do I know which it the best choice for my skin needs?

I have recently discovered a few moles under my armpit. I usually shave under my arms and was wondering if this is the cause. Also is there a way to get them removed?

From Natasha Manda

Question

Hi Dr Allem, recently I’ve been having a few breakouts on my forehead and cheek area. I’ve been to a dermatologist before and he really helped me treat my skin when it was at its worst, he also told me not to pick on/pop my pimples and I don’t, till this day. My question is, if I’m not popping my pimples, I’m living a somewhat healthy lifestyle, I drink up to 3 litres of water per day, then why do my pimples/ breakouts leave me with blemishes and how can I treat them?

Question from Adelaide Motata

Question

Hi Dr Maureen,

I used to use serums as part of my daily skin care routine (combination skin) – and they worked well for me. But hit hard on the pocket. So I started looking into incorporating organic virgin coconut oil into my routine. I am now at the point where I don’t use serums any longer, and just use my coconut oil in conjunction with my normal face moisturizer – even as a moisturizer for my eye area. It hasn’t caused any breakouts, irritations…it’s worked out quite well.

What are your opinions on using organic virgin coconut oil as part of one’s skin care routine? Do you feel that I should still have a serum in my routine?
