I’m losing a lot of hair, especially after washing it. How do I know whether the normal amount is falling out or it’s excessive?
Gaby Kriel, Blowdrying and Heat Styling Expert at Tanaz, responds:
“On average, every person looses 100 hairs per day. The easiest way to monitor it is to catch your hair that falls out in the shower/bath and keep it in plastic bags. Then you can see if the hair loss is getting worse, or better. Definite signs of alopecia will be visible thinning or balding spots around the scalp. Recommended products would be the Phillip Kingsley Stimulating Scalp Mask as well as the Phillip Kingsley Scalp Toner and Soy Protein capsules.”

I recently noticed that my hair is thinning, and I find a lot of hair strands coming out during my shower. I am currently using the Doves Hair Fall range, I’m hoping it works.
When I was 19 and on the 3-month contraceptive injection, it caused so much hair loss for me, my ponytail diameter shrunk to almost half. It was so scary, I went off the injection and it took about 2 years for my hair to get back to its normal volume.
Colouring your hair, change of season, stress and genetics all play a role in hair loss. I have long hair and do tend to lose a lot more when seasons are changing. Would love to know where to buy the Phillip Kingsley products though.
Gosh! I had really long hair and I cut it into a pixie cut, due to it falling out. It seems to be growing back well.
My family has a history of hair loss and I’ve noticed that my hair falls out a lot more now since I have coloured my hair.
I think blowing hair with a hot hair dryer is the cause of hair loss, due to heat damage.
I have excessive hair fall. Where do i buy products from Phillip Kingsley Stimulating Scalp Mask & Amp, and Phillip Kingsley Scalp Toner and Soy Protein capsules? I live in Durban.
100 hairs a day sounds like way too many, and keeping them in plastic bags would be the strangest thing ever!
Losing hair is such a scary thing. Especially when the Pantene ads look so good. Hair loss affects ones self-esteem and confidence. It’s important to keep stress levels moderate and remember we need to lose a few hairs for new ones to grow.
I used to suffer from hair loss when my hair was chemically treated ( due to using relaxer). I noticed that once I stopped using it, my hair was a lot more resilient when combing. One needs to know his/her texture and hair type. If you have fine hair, like myself, you need to do a lot of research and take care of your hair. Don’t be embarrassed to see a doctor if you lose more than usual, as stated in the article.
I agree with you, Sandra. Some relaxers can be too harsh and result in hair loss.
