How to create the perfect bun

Sock bun

If you feel like attempting a new hairstyle this season, the sock bun or doughnut is a good one to opt for. It’s quick, it’s easy and you simply need a doughnut and a few bobby pins. Add a sweep of your favourite shade of lipstick and some bold eyes and you’re on your way.

Steps:

  1. Try choosing a sock bun as close to your natural hair colour as possible. You don’t want a blond bun sticking out of your dark brown hair if you don’t manage to get it perfect all the time.
  2. Tie your hair in a pony first. It will keep it in place and make it easier for you to start the bun. Remember the higher the pony and bun the better.
  3. Place the bun in your hair over your pony (so that your hair sticks out the middle bit) and loosely shape your hair around the doughnut. Continue this motion all the way around until the entire doughnut is covered with your hair.
  4. As you do this, slowly tuck under the excess hair to secure it.
  5. You may want to stick in a bobby pin or two to hold it.
  6. Finish off with some hairspray to ensure a sleek tight finish.

I bought one of these sock buns from Dischem, and it was very cheap. What a handy tool. It makes a perfect bun every time, even though I have very fine hair.

I bought the little tool, it’s expensive yet valuable. I’m African but I can make a bun and get compliments of having curly coloured hair.

  • I’ve failed repeatedly making a bun otherwise, so this little tool might just help.

  • I love the bun, simple and easy

  • I struggle a lot with making my daughter’s hair in a bun for ballet. She has very fine, thin, long hair and it always come loose again. I will definitely try the doughnut, thanks.

It is harder to do this bun when your hair is really long. I find it helpful when you pull the doughnut upwards to ensure that the bun stays neat.

I always wonder how one gets a neat bun, thank you for the tip. I am going to purchase the doughnut soon.

I have long, fine straight hair and I find that the only time I can get my hair into a neat and tight bun is when my hair is almost needing a wash, but not greasy enough to look dirty. If my hair is freshly washed, it’s too slippery to hold onto anything and I don’t like to use styling products unless I’m curling my hair.

  • I am actually wearing a bun today and I wore one yesterday.. after many years :) I was too lazy to wash my hair so I just put it in a bun :D
