If you feel like attempting a new hairstyle this season, the sock bun or doughnut is a good one to opt for. It’s quick, it’s easy and you simply need a doughnut and a few bobby pins. Add a sweep of your favourite shade of lipstick and some bold eyes and you’re on your way.
Steps:
- Try choosing a sock bun as close to your natural hair colour as possible. You don’t want a blond bun sticking out of your dark brown hair if you don’t manage to get it perfect all the time.
- Tie your hair in a pony first. It will keep it in place and make it easier for you to start the bun. Remember the higher the pony and bun the better.
- Place the bun in your hair over your pony (so that your hair sticks out the middle bit) and loosely shape your hair around the doughnut. Continue this motion all the way around until the entire doughnut is covered with your hair.
- As you do this, slowly tuck under the excess hair to secure it.
- You may want to stick in a bobby pin or two to hold it.
- Finish off with some hairspray to ensure a sleek tight finish.

I struggle a lot with making my daughter’s hair in a bun for ballet. She has very fine, thin, long hair and it always come loose again. I will definitely try the doughnut, thanks.

It is harder to do this bun when your hair is really long. I find it helpful when you pull the doughnut upwards to ensure that the bun stays neat.

I always wonder how one gets a neat bun, thank you for the tip. I am going to purchase the doughnut soon.

I have long, fine straight hair and I find that the only time I can get my hair into a neat and tight bun is when my hair is almost needing a wash, but not greasy enough to look dirty. If my hair is freshly washed, it’s too slippery to hold onto anything and I don’t like to use styling products unless I’m curling my hair.

I am actually wearing a bun today and I wore one yesterday.. after many years :) I was too lazy to wash my hair so I just put it in a bun :D

Where can I purchase a Denman doughnut?

I found this look to be the perfect ‘Go to’ when your hair is having those flimsy days and doesn’t feels like styling to your needs, like mine does. The sock/doughnut/ballet bun gives you the most sophisticated look suited to dress up or down.

I have the same situation as NaturalDiva.
My thought: those not so young should rather have the bun a bit lower, higher shows the age up more.

Is this the only way to do this? I have long hair and I end up with a kind of ring at the base of the bun from tucking in the ends of my hair.. Maybe I’m doing this wrong..

My hair goes all the way down to my lower back so the way I do it might work for you too. I also make a ponytail but when I put the bun only half way or about 2/3 down my hair so it is closer to my head than the tips of my hair. I then wrap my pony around it. It’s difficult to explain. From the point you decide to start pull it over the bun and then push your fingers through the centre of the bun and pull it out. Then repeat until you wrapped your whole pony around the bun. Then I roll the bun downwards so that is against me head. I then pull the hair around to make sure the whole bun is covered. It sounds weird but you’d be surprised how easy it is. To finish it up I put in a few bobbypins to secure the bun not to pin away hair because this way all my hair is secured by the bun itself. I hope you understand what I’m trying to say! If not I’ll look around for some videos that might show it.

It sounds really complicated but I figured it out from your steps. Thank you for your idea. I will try it next time :)

I have hair that’s about 65cm long. I use 3 hairbands. First make a ponytail and tie it in place. Secondly, start swirling your hair around the ponytail foundation that you have made and then put your hairband around it to hold it in place and then thirdly, use a fancy (fluffy or tassely) band to just place over the bun you have created. Works every time. The last band is just for decoration and to make sure the tail of the bun is tucked in :)

Firstly, wow you have really long hair! I make my bun without a doughnut the way you describe. Its really fast and easy! :)

I’ll try that next time when I get braids. Unfortunately I don’t have long hair, but thank you for the tip.
