How to do your own fishtail braid

How to do a fishtail plait

So pretty and oh-so flirty, a fishtail braid is a more sophisticated version of the regular plait. Little did we know that this primary-school-favourite would come back to be one of the biggest hairstyle trends of 2013. Seen on beauties such as Blake Lively and Kim Kardashian, the braid can be worn either loosely or structured, and works best on very long hair. Easier than it looks, the fishtail braid can be achieved in just a few simple steps:

Step 1
Pull your hair into a low ponytail at the nape of your neck. Secure it with an elastic band (you’re going to end up snipping it, so be sure to use an old one).

Step 2:
Split your ponytail into two even sections.

Step 3:
From here onwards, the fishtail braid is treated just like a regular plait, except you will be using two sections instead of three. Separate a small section of hair from the outer edge (near the elastic) and pull it across to the other side. The hair will overlap just like a regular plait. Repeat with a section of hair from the other side, but be sure to grip the hair tightly. Repeat the pattern all the way to the ends of your hair.

Step 4:
Secure the end of your braid with a hairband, and then carefully cut the elastic at the top of your braid.

Step 5:
Gently pull or tug at your braid to loosen it at the base, thereby creating a softer, more laid-back style.

There you have it – effortless chic in five easy steps! Need a bit more help?
