Every year since 2000, the company has chosen a colour that reflects the current cultural climate. The chosen colour has historically influenced trends in all things that affect our daily lives – interior décor, fashion, food, architecture and travel.

You may remember that the Pantone Colours of 2017 was Nature’s favourite neutral: Pantone Greenery 15-0343.

This year it’s PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet’s turn to shine. Enigmatic purples have also long been symbolic of counterculture, unconventionality, and artistic brilliance. Musical icons Prince, David Bowie, and Jimi Hendrix brought shades of Ultra Violet to the forefront of western pop culture as personal expressions of individuality. Nuanced and full of emotion, the depth of symbolises experimentation and non-conformity, spurring individuals to imagine their unique mark on the world, and push boundaries through creative outlets.

“Be prepared to see a boom of violet everywhere, it’s especially pretty on eye’s inner corners,” celebrity makeup artist Patrick Ta, told Elle Magazine. He’s worked with Emily Ratajkowski, Bella Hadid and Camila Cabello.

If you’re still not sure you could keep calm and wear purple, let Rihanna’s impact convince you to invest in a few purple products. Pantone Vice President Laurie Pressman credits Rihanna in part for this year’s colour choice and thinks the singer and beauty mogul embodies violet. “When you think of this colour, she perfectly sums up the originality, the inventiveness, the forward-thinking, the non-conformity,” explains Pressman.

Historically, there has been a mystical or spiritual quality attached to Ultra Violet. The colour is often associated with mindfulness practices, which offer a higher ground to those seeking refuge from today’s over-stimulated world. The use of purple-toned lighting in meditation spaces and other gathering places energizes the communities that gather there and inspire connection.
