Our editor recently put some Smudge makeup products to the test – here’s how they fared:
“I’ve always associated Smudge with affordable quality, so I was eager to put a few items from the range to the test to see if they lived up to my expectations.
First up was the Smudge 15 Colour Eyeshadow Palette in Mellow, a selection of gorgeous nude, bronze and gold-toned eyeshadows you can wear day and night. I love the soft, creamy texture – it applies like a dream and blends with ease, plus it feels really light and smooth on the skin.
The palette contains a mixture of satin and shimmery hues so you can create dimension and add a little sparkle anytime you want. This combination of colours is really flattering on all skin tones. I was impressed by the colour payoff and longevity of the eyeshadow; it lasts all day and still looked great after a full day of work. At only R110, it’s a steal.
I’ve been alternating between using the Smudge Blush Duo in Rubies and the Smudge Natural Bronzing Powder. I love the Blush Duo for days where my complexion can do with a pop of colour. You can either wear the shades on their own, or layer the complementary shades for a unique wash of colour. I used the pink shade on the apples of my cheeks, and applied the peach shade almost like a highlighter, on my cheekbones. It gives skin a lovely, healthy-looking flush and it’s really pigmented, so you only need a little bit of product.
The Bronzing Powder is designed to give you that sun-kissed glow, regardless of whether you’ve been stuck inside or not. I love the combination of these three shades – I swirl my bronzing brush across all three to apply them in one go. It gives my skin a multi-dimensional, warm glow. You could, of course, apply the shades separately for more precise colour placement. Like the Blush Duo, it has great colour payoff and lasts on my skin all day.
Brows are still a big focus in beauty and the Smudge Brow Kit helps you create brows that are fuller and more defined. It contains a dual-ended brush which lets you dab on colour with the brush applicator and then blend it out using the spoolie on the other end. The kit contains two powders which you can blend to mix your exact shade, as well as a wax to set your look. It’s a really handy kit that’s very effectively. The powders blend into eyebrows easily, filling sparse areas and creating density, and the wax helps hold them in place all day, which is particularly great if your brows tend to get unruly.
The last product I’ve been testing is the Smudge Lip Gloss in Clear, a concentrated, high-shine gloss designed for a slick look. I like to lightly dab it over my lipstick for a shiny finish, and I love the juicy, glossy texture and sweet taste. This is also available in a variety of colours, but I love the versatility of the clear one – you can literally turn any of your lip colours into high-shine versions of themselves.
My overall impression of Smudge products is that they’re high quality, they’re versatile, and they’re extremely affordable. I would recommend the brand for anyone, from beginners to experts.”

Smudge a South African brand that is manufactured in China. Does anyone know if it’s been tested and considered a safe, healthy brand? It’s unfortunate that the Chinese have a reputation for not always making quality products. They put melamine (kind of like plastic) in their powdered baby milk formula.

I was gifted with my smudge eyeshadow and lipstick for my birthday. I have had so many people stop me and compliment me on the eyeshadow and lipstick. I have become crazy about smudge Now.
