Beauty and wellness are no longer mutually exclusive. As wellness and self-care practices are becoming an important part of everyday life, the beauty world took note, and we’re seeing a major influx of beauty products embracing wellness aspects. From natural and sustainable ingredients, to recyclable packaging and clean formulas, it’s been such a pleasure to witness the rise of mindful beauty.

Our editor’s been putting a host of products to the test to discover some new favourites. With wellness, ethics and clean formulas in mind, these are the products that won her stamp of approval.

RVB LAB The Makeup So Beautiful Eyeshadow Palette (R995.00)

Beauty embracing wellness: 8 Editor-approved products to try now 2

“I love RVB LAB The Makeup products, not only because of the quality of the formulations (it’s a favourite among professionals), but also because of the brand’s dedication to keeping their formulas free from potentially harmful ingredients. All their makeup products are free from heavy metals, parabens, mineral oils, animal ingredients and gluten and gluten-derivates. Plus, they’re cruelty-free.

This new makeup palette arrived just in time for autumn and it contains pretty much all the eyeshadow colours I use during the colder months. I love the combination of matte and shimmer, and light and darker shades. The shadows are long-wearing and easy to blend thanks to their luxe textures. It gets a ten-out-of-ten from me.”

SOiL Remedy Rollers (R50.00 each)

Beauty embracing wellness: 8 Editor-approved products to try now 3

“SOiL’s Remedy Rollers are absolute genius and I was so thrilled to hear that they now have a whopping 12 different variants available. These handy little rollers offer the benefits of aromatherapy on the go – they’re small enough to carry in your handbag, and they’re designed to offer relief and support for a variety of concerns. Each variant contains a therapeutic blend of organic essential oils in a base of Fair-Trade Certified Jojoba oil. These remedy rollers have been diluted to the correct concentration to be effective when applied to pulse points or affected areas.

My favourite Remedy Rollers are Bug Away (which helps keep pesky mozzies away in the evenings), Easy Breathe (to assist with my sinus issues as the seasons change) and Energy (which is great for when you need a pick-me-up). I love how affordable they are and that they’re made locally from the very best quality essential oils.”

“Trust The Body Shop to always be at the forefront of innovation when it comes to the environment. These multi-tasking pigments are super versatile and can be applied to lips, cheeks and eyes. The formula blends in seamlessly in any of your looks and leaves skin and lips feeling moisturised, with no stickiness or dryness. Plus, the pigments are buildable, so you can decide on the intensity of the colour.

I love a good multi-tasker and these babies do not disappoint. The texture is sensational and the pigment blends like a dream. I love the aluminium packaging (yes to no plastic!) and the fact that they’re vegan and contain 90% natural origin ingredients.”

Elizabeth Arden White Tea Eau de Parfum 100ml (R1185.00)

Beauty embracing wellness: 8 Editor-approved products to try now 6

“White Tea Eau de Toilette is such a classic scent, but I was really intrigued when I heard about a more intense eau de parfum version in the works. This new elevated fragrance offers a deeper concentration than the original scent is was crafted using VivaScentz™ technology – a really cool new way of bringing wellness into fragrance. It is essentially a fragrance design tool that allows perfumers to create compositions that will enhance a person’s wellbeing, based on the understanding of the link between fragrances and wellbeing.

A crisp and vibrant floral scent, the fragrance comprises a host of gorgeous notes:

Top Notes: Italian Mandarin, Sea Breeze Accord, Clary Sage
Heart Notes: White Tea Accord, Mate Absolute, Upcycled Rose Water, Jasmine Petals
Base Notes: Tonka Bean Absolute (Ethically Sourced), Trio of Tranquillity Musks, Amberwood

The message behind the scent is to discover a moment for yourself, and to savour the beauty all around us. It’s a really beautiful addition to the Arden family and I can see this becoming a firm favourite among fragrance lovers.”

Nivea Naturally Good Oil Infused Shower Gel (R69.99)

Beauty embracing wellness: 8 Editor-approved products to try now 7

“I prefer a shower gel to a bar of soap, and these Oil Infused Shower Gels by Nivea have been such a hit in my house. First off, I have to point out that it’s really encouraging to see a major global brand like Nivea taking steps to design products that are kinder to the environment. This shower gel has a 99% biodegradable formula and is made from naturally-derived ingredients (including responsibly sourced organic oil).

The formula is vegan and the bottle is made from 97% recycled PET plastic. I love how luxurious the formula feels on my skin and it’s really moisturising too. The Honeysuckle scent is my favourite, but the Rose Water variant is really lovely too. I see this becoming a permanent addition to my shower line-up.”

label.m Vibrant Rose Colour Care Shampoo (R430.00) and Conditioner (R470.00)

Beauty embracing wellness: 8 Editor-approved products to try now 8

“If you’re familiar with label.m, you’ll know that as much as they’re a fashion-focused hair care brand, they’re even bigger on sustainability. The packaging of all their shampoos and conditioners is now 100% recyclable and is made with 30% post-consumer recycled plastic – and that includes the pumps! The range is vegan, it’s cruelty-free, it’s sulphate-free and the products are filled with beautiful naturally-derived botanical ingredients that are gentle yet effective.

I love the Vibrant Rose Colour Care Shampoo and Conditioner duo for my hair as I colour it a couple of times per year and am always looking for products to prolong my colour. The gentle formula contains sunflower seed extract and quinoa protein to add moisture and shine while protecting from external damage and colour fade. It leaves my hair soft and shiny and it has a lovely scent.

The brand recently got a brand new look and I love the sleek and sophisticated packaging. In case you are wondering about the square bottles and how easy it will be to get the product out… Each bottle comes with a removable pump which you can screw on and use at home, but it also comes with a cap, so that you can remove the pump and screw a cap on when travelling to avoid spillage. Clever, right?”

Eau Thermale Avène DermAbsolu Recontouring Mask (R595.00)

Beauty embracing wellness: 8 Editor-approved products to try now 9

“Designed for mature and maturing skins, this is a really exciting new launch from Avène. The DermAbsolu range has been a major success as it offers effective anti-ageing solutions for mature skin in gentle formulas that don’t cause sensitivity. This new mask has a gel-cream texture and contains bakuchiol (a plant-based cell restructuring agent) and glycoleol (known to fight dryness and strengthen the skin’s barrier). It can be used up to three times per week and can be left on overnight as a sleeping mask for plumper, tighter, more moisturised skin.

Avène’s DermAbsolu range is such a winner for mature skins and other than the obvious skincare benefits of this new mask, there’s also an impressive wellness side to it. An eco-designed skincare product, it is composed of 91% ingredients of natural origin and it’s packaged in a recyclable tube which is made from 22% recycled plastic.”
