Find your perfect foundation formula

A radiant, flawless complexion is not only the blessing of good genes. The right foundation shade and type can make a world of a difference.

The base to perfect make-up is a beautiful foundation. It can be tricky to choose the right formula and shade. A good foundation covers up any skin concerns such as uneven skin tone and pigmentation, fine lines and large pores without being too obvious.

When choosing a foundation, it’s best to first know your skin type, the coverage you need and the finish you desire from your foundation.

Skin type vs. formula
If you have oily skin, go for oil-free or mattifying foundations. For normal to combination skin, a cream-to-powder foundation is the best. If you have dry skin, use a stick, liquid or hydrating foundation. Mineral foundation works well for all skin types, especially for dry and sensitive skin. A mousse foundation is great for any skin type but most ideal for oily / combination skin because it helps to mattify it. It also creates a flawless finish on mature skin as it doesn’t settle on fine lines and wrinkles.

Pink vs. yellow undertones
Yellow-based foundations leave the skin with a natural-looking finish while those with a pink undertone are ideal for a fair or light-skinned complexion. Most foundations come with an SPF 15. This amount is never enough coverage so always use sunscreen under your foundation or opt for a moisturiser with an SPF of at least 30.

BB creams vs. tinted moisturisers
If you don’t like wearing foundation, a tinted moisturiser is your best option. It helps to improve the overall health of skin, yet leaving it with a natural-looking finish. A BB cream gives a bit more coverage than a tinted moisturiser. Most BB creams are creams that give a hint of a tint when applied as they adapt to your skin tone.

We recommend:
Avon Skin Loving Beauty Balm, R159.95.
Conceal while your skin heals with Clinique Even Better Foundation with SPF 15, R375.
For natural-looking coverage, try Garnier Miracle Skin Perfector BB, R84.95.
Maybelline Matte Dream Mousse, R145, is great for a matte and smooth finish.

  1. These are all amazing foundations. I have tried them all. The Dream Matte Mousse seemed to roll off my skin.

  2. I prefer liquid foundations as they are the easiest to apply. I find it is very easy for mousse ones to look cakey and cream to powder can dry to quickly. I have not yet tried a mineral or a powder foundation. I love BB creams for everyday use.

  3. Garnier BB is my favourite. I tried a few but this is the best for my skin. It does not cake on your face, gives you a little coverage while giving your skin such a gorgeous glow.

  4. Great articel. I didn’t know about the Maybelline matte mousse. I will definitely pick it up. I still use liquid based foundations because they are easier to manipulate i.e.; mix with other liquids or layer for desired coverage. Sunblock is always recommended. And, oh! flash-proof foundations are a yes! I have the white over-cast some foundations give. So, I am a huge ‘HD’ formulated foundations girl.

  5. I noticed that when I use foundation it makes my face look puffy, maybe I need to change from powder to a mousse but my problem is getting them in darker shades.

  6. I want to try the Maybelline Matte Dream Mousse, it looks so inviting but I’m not sure which store has a good counter where they can assist me. Any idea?
