Primers for a perfect canvas

If you haven’t used a primer yet, you’re missing out. Though some might see it as an unnecessary extra step in their beauty routine, the benefits far outweigh the extra two minutes you spend in the morning.

The importance of primers

So why use a primer? Applied after your moisturiser and before your foundation, a primer evens out your skin tone, creating the perfect canvas for your foundation. Your make-up won’t just apply more evenly and look more flawless, but it will last a lot longer on your skin too. Plus, with all the added benefits included in the formulations, it could even help you combat oiliness, breakouts, dehydration and disguise fine lines.

With so many on the market, it’s difficult to choose just one… Here, four incredibly effective primers that we’re currently coveting:

Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base, R610

Dermalogica Age Smart Skinperfect Primer SPF30, R720

black|Up 8Hr Correcting Primer, R520

Lancôme La Base Pro Perfecting Make-Up Primer, R495

Which of these would you most like to try, Beauties?

  1. I have been using the Smashbox Photo Finish Primer (I’m a first time primer user) and I have not seen any of the results that most primer reviews claim. However, I am a huge Lancôme fan – so I am definitely looking forward to trying Lancôme La Base Pro Perfecting Make-Up Primer instead.

  2. I highly recommend Bobbi’s face base. It smells absolutely refreshing and delicious, plus it’s a real treat for the skin. I always feel like my skin is “fed” when I apply this.

  3. When I was pregnant I was getting pimples and I was ashamed to go out with my husband. Now I wash ma face with Pond’s Flawless Radiance Even Tone Facial Foam. Afterwards I apply Perfect Colour Complex Anti Marks for all skin types. I’m 23 years old and I don’t know if I chose the right combination for my face or especially for my age. I don’t want to damage my skin and I don’t know witch Pond’s Foundation I should use for my age.

  4. Definitely the Bobbi Brown Face Base for me! Though it’s a bit on the pricey side.

  5. I have seen beautiful ladies waring Pond’s clothes and I have no clue were they work at. I also want to work at Pond’s in Mafikeng, please help.

  6. I’d love to try the Bobby Brown one. I’ve read amazing things about it. But it is just OH SO EXPENSIVE!

  7. I would love to try the Lancôme La Base Pro Perfecting Make-Up Primer, the packaging looks gorgeous and luxurious. My make up stays on so much longer and looks better with a primer.

  8. I would like to try the BlackUp cosmetics range. I always see it in stores but rarely drawn to it. You’ve listed great products.

    1. Hi Melissa. It serves a different purpose to BB/CC Creams. While BB/CC creams also even out the skin tone and refine the appearance of pores, they are tinted to provide a touch of colour like a tinted moisturiser would. Primers are usually clear (either water based/silicon based), and their main purpose is to smooth the skin’s surface to create the perfect canvas for your foundation. Foundation sticks to primer better than it would to your skin after you have applied your moisturiser, so you get longer wear out of your foundation.
